Convention Variant Covers

This page is for Neonomicon convention covers – for Providence, go here.

Avatar Press likes to use variant covers to promote its series, particularly short-run limited series like Moore’s; besides their artistic merit, several of these covers have more to say about the contents of the book than readers might think.

The convention covers were produced especially to be sold at various conventions in 2010 and 2011, and appear to mainly depict scenes not featured in The Courtyard or Neonomicon.

Neonomicon #1 Chicago

Central figure is Aldo Sax, accompanied by guards dressed as in Neonomicon #1 and Neonomicon #4; the facility also appears to be the same. Sax is in a straitjacket, signifying he is a danger to himself and/or others. Notably, he is not depicted with the swastika carved into his forehead as he appears in Neonomicon #1, suggesting this scene may occur between the events of The Courtyard and Neonomicon…or else they just didn’t feel like putting a swastika on the cover.

Aldo Sax in Red Hook, presumably after or during the slaying of Germaine at the end of The Courtyard. Sax’s reflection in the window may hint that he no longer sees himself as human.

Neonomicon #1 Project Comic Con

Aldo Sax again, presumably in the sanitarium; locked in a padded room, restrained to a bed, and in a straitjacket to emphasize how dangerous he is. It’s not clear if the insects are intended to represent symptoms of formication (the sensation of bugs crawling or stinging all over you, a delusion associated with Morgellons), or are supposed to be actual insects associated with some Mythos entity.

Unidentified FBI SWAT agent; location unknown, as few of the doors pictured in either The Courtyard or Neonomicon are featured with panels. Given the cracked and peeling plaster, may have been intended to represent Aldo Sax’ apartment in Red Hook.

Neonomicon #2 New York Comic Con

Scene where Aldo Sax is caught having just cut off Carl Perlman’s hand, which places this event between the end of The Courtyard and the beginning of Neonomicon.
